Collected Thoughts on “Quarantine”

The Latin root of the word “quarantine” is “forty.”
What are examples of 40 in the Bible?
The flood lasted 40 days.
Moses fled to Egypt for 40 years.
For 40 days Moses stayed on Mt. Sinai receiving the Commandments.
The Exodus lasted 40 years.
A woman rested for 40 days after giving birth.
Jesus fasted in the wilderness 40 days.
After Jesus rose from the dead, he stayed for 40 days before ascending into heaven.
The season of Lent lasts 40 days.

Whenever the number 40 appears in the Bible, there is a change happening. So some biblical scholars think that the number 40 represents “change.”  It is the time of preparing a person, or people, to make a fundamental change.

During our time of “quarantine” today, the Earth seems to be at rest, and our hearts are transforming. The air is becoming cleaner because of less pollution, rivers are clearing up, vegetation is growing, there is less theft and murder, we are realizing the value of friendship and connection, and people are to God in prayer because they realize their need.

So make the most of this season to spend time in prayer and let yourself be changed. Paul promised that everything can work together for the good for those who love God (Rom. 8:28). May this 2020 year improve the vision of our hearts—on God, on other people, and on our world.
