Suggestions to Care for Ourselves and for God's World

Given all the stress factors associated with the pandemic, the numerous world and national crises, and no shortage of challenges in our daily lives, many of us are dealing with previously unsurpassed levels of physical and emotional tension, depression, and other symptoms of stress. In addition to our first line of defense--our faith in an all-powerful God--one of the strongest tools we have for combating this strain is immersing ourselves in God‘s gift of creation.

Spending time outdoors on a regular basis can increase immunity, decrease anxiety, lower high blood pressure, fight depression, and improve memory. It lightens our worries, makes us feel more grounded, and refreshes our perspective. So bundle up and take a walk, play with a child or pet, or enjoy a picnic on a sunny day (a great way to engage in safe social interaction!). And while you’re out there, hum a few bars of “This Is My Father’s World” or “For the Beauty of the Earth.” Scatter some birdseed, pick up a discarded piece of trash, and don’t forget to verbally express your gratitude to God for the beauty surrounding us.

“ Creation is the visual, fragrant, audible, touchable, and tastable manifestation of God’s love, the place where God’s desire that others be, and be well, finds earthly expression.” -- Dr. Norman Wirzba
