Baptist Women's Documentary Now Available Online

The Baptist Women in Ministry's (BWIM) Midwives of a Movement documentary can now be found on YouTube. This documentary chronicles the stories of the women who boldly birthed a movement to seek greater visibility and opportunities for women in the Southern Baptist Convention in the 1970s and 1980s. Despite great opposition, their courage blazed pathways for advancing women in ministry and leadership among Baptists over the last 40+ years.

During a time when women in ministry among Baptists hear much negativity surrounding their call and service to God, BWIM joins in solidarity with all women who serve among Baptists to share a positive message of affirmation and hope. One that proudly demonstrates that when women are pushed down and marginalized, they always rise up!

Gutter Repair Project Finished!

It has been a long and costly journey repairing the water damage to the sanctuary’s gutters, but it's finally finished. All of the main work was completed weeks ago, but we learned that one side needed another downspout installed to prevent more water build up in the future. Now that extra work has been completed as well. We were able to pay for the repairs because of the incredible generosity of our church family. There was only $3,000 left that we didn’t raise for the initial big project, and then the gutter downspout extension added another $2,150. If anyone is led to help the church alleviate some of that remaining cost, it would be both helpful and welcome.

An Update from the Podgaiskys

Gennady & Mina Podgaisky are missionaries to Ukraine that our church offerings support. They have not been able to move back to Ukraine since Russia began its invasion in February 2022. So they have been traveling, speaking, supporting, and counseling remotely ever since. In July 2022 they spoke in our church services, and we have been praying for them since then. Here is an update they recently posted:

We have relocated to Krakow, Poland!
Current prayer requests:
• Praise God, our move to Poland went smoothly. We will serve the Ukrainian refugees living there and continue other ministries online.
• Pray for our upcoming trip to Kyiv for 2 weeks. We have several items to take care of. Pray for God's protection, for strength, and a productive trip.
• Please continue praying for the end of the war in Ukraine.
• Pray for wisdom and protection for the leaders and defenders protecting the country.
• Pray for big and small miracles in Ukraine.

Thanks to you, we can fulfill our God-given call to serve the people of Ukraine! We thank you for your faithful support of us and our ministries.

Special Guests in Worship – La Esperanza

This Sunday in worship we will be joined by the staff of La Espernza. Their ministry aims to strengthen the social, physical, and mental well-being of the local Latino community, as well as build relationships between cultures. They offer ESL classes, translation services, youth & children camps, and social support. During our worship service, we will hear from their staff members Rebecca and Ana about the great work they do.

After worship, Rebecca and Ana will hang out in the Fellowship Hall, showing pictures and answering any questions. And they will have homemade tamales available! (The perfect way to enjoy a special Mother’s Day lunch you won’t find anywhere else.) The tamales will be on sale as a fundraiser to help raise money for a local mother who was recently diagnosed with breast cancer.

To learn more about La Esperanza (which means “hope” in Spanish), go to their website here or their Facebook page here!

Ash Wednesday Worship – Wednesday, Feb. 14, 6:00 pm

It's hard to believe, but the time to prepare for Easter is soon upon us. Much like Advent is a time to get ready for Christmas, the time to get ready for Easter is Lent. It is focused on prayer, repentance, and self-reflection. We'll begin our preparation for Easter with an Ash Wednesday worship service February 14 at 6:00 pm in the Fellowship Hall. It will be an opportunity to be still, listen for God, and hear a reminder of humility. All are invited to come worship.

Welcome Chuck Taft as Our Minister of Music

On Sunday, December 10, the Personnel Committee presented to the church Chuck Taft as their recommendation for our minister of music. There was a meet-and-greet fellowship time that morning with Chuck and his wife, Renee, then the church voted in a called business meeting during worship to officially call Chuck to the position. We are very excited about him becoming a part of our church family. Chuck is already known by many in our congregation, having grown up around Weaverville and graduated from North Buncombe High School. He has directed his Reuter Center Singers choir when they have performed in our sanctuary many times, he directed the Messiah performance here last December, and he is an adjunct instructor at UNCA and Mars Hill. (Read his bio here.) We welcome Chuck’s passion for ministry, talents in music leadership, and heart for the Lord as he blesses our church in the future!

Give Together High School Food Drive

Now through Dec. 14, we will be collecting items for the Give Together Food Drive sponsored by the North Buncombe High School Student Council. Once collected, the food will be distributed to the Flat Creek Food Pantry, ABCCM, and MANNA Food Bank along with school counselors to give to student families as needed. Place donations in the wrapped gift box located in the Fellowship Hall beside our normal ABCCM-North food donation basket.

Requested Items:
 • Non-perishable canned food; vegetables/fruits, soups, beans
 • Instant Oatmeal, pasta, rice, jelly, and ramen noodles
 • Cornbread mix, granola bars, etc.

Nursing Home and Homebound Bags

We are collecting items to donate small gift bags to the residents of Mars Hill Manor Retirement Center and our church's homebound. The Youth Advisory Panel of WMU NC (Woman's Missionary Union) will put the bags together, and our Pauline Snelson Women's Mission Group will deliver them. Items will be collected through Wednesday, Dec. 6, and we hope to make 100-125 bags. Please help us spread holiday cheer by donating chapstick, small tissues, travel size hand lotion, and/or individually packaged cookies or crackers into the labeled box by the elevator outside the Fellowship Hall.

Gutter Repair Project & Update

The sanctuary gutter repair work has started and will take about two months, depending on weather and availability of supplies. We continue to raise money for the repairs. Please make this a matter of prayer as we address the big repair cost. So far people have pledged $61,300! Our goal is $80,000, so we're making progress! May it inspire others as well to help our sanctuary building look its best. Pledges and/or donations can be made by contacting Debbie Sprinkle at the church office (645-6720, debbie@fbcwvl.org).
