Primary Function:
The Minister of Music is responsible for leading the church in a dynamic music ministry that will inspire and enhance congregational worship and fellowship. They will engage all ages in a variety of music experiences and education. They will promote music as a vital part of worship and spiritual growth.
Educational and Experience Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree (from an accredited college or university) with a minimum of 3– 5 years experience in church music ministry leadership.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
A calling from God to serve in church music ministry, exhibiting a deep faith and love of church music.
Effective relationship skills with all types of people and ages, including good communication skills.
Knowledgeable about incorporating various musical instruments in worship (like piano, organ, guitar, percussion, handbells, or others).
Demonstrate a commitment to teamwork and collaboration with all facets of the church and ministries.
Current and growing knowledge of a variety of music styles.
Seek to promote and expand the music ministry through creative outreach programs and recruitment of choir singers and other participants.
Key Functions/Responsibilities:
Facilitate and manage a comprehensive music program for individuals and groups within the church and seek outreach opportunities to expand.
Work closely with the pastor, church staff, and music participants to plan worship and special services. Attend weekly staff meetings.
Welcome opportunities to participate in community church services and musical programs.
Direct congregational music for all services.
Lead the church choir, including preparation and rehearsal. Invite artists and singers to participate.
Organize and supervise any music activities for other age groups.
Supervise instrumental music offerings, including the accompanist (organ/piano) and other musicians.
Plan and oversee the annual church music program budget.
Be willing to seek out and encourage input from the church congregation as it relates to the church music program.
Hours and Compensation:
Permanent part-time position. Normally requires approximately 15-20 hours per week.
Compensation: a minimum of $18,000 annually, commensurate with level of experience and educational background.
The Minister of Music is essential to the life and mission of the church. This position is one of teaching and growing self and others through worshipful music and song, as well as through example of Christian engagement in the ministries of the church.
